Palestine refugees hope to return

PALESTINIAN families who have been exiled from their homeland for generations will one day return as part of a powerful, peaceful resistance movement, hopes one young refugee.

Abdulhameed Al Khateeb is a 25-year-old financial professional whose family have called Bahrain home for more than 30 years.

He joined the protest in front of the UN House yesterday alongside his 21-year-old brother Ali Al Khateeb, in the hope that one day 'peace and justice'‌ would finally come to all Palestinians and Israelis.

'Palestinians all over the world are refugees, children of refugees and grandchildren of refugees,'‌ said Abdulhameed.

'We are people without a home and there are millions of us who still have their home keys and deeds to their houses, with which they fled when they were ethnically cleansed from Palestine when Israel invaded and destroyed their villages.

'Our village Salhiya in northern Palestine is lush green and remarkably beautiful.

'I have seen it in a documentary but I haven't been there, though I long to '“ I can't and Israel will not allow me to enter.'‌

What Abdulhameed knows of his homeland comes from the stories his father and grandfather told him and what little he has managed to glean from television or read online.

'Mine is a country that is rich in history '“ an awesome place in the Mediterranean and like every Palestinian, I hope to get there one day,'‌ he said.

'As long as this siege exists and the people of Palestine and Gaza live in an open-air prison in horrible conditions, the situation will never get better.

'Every two years this has repeated, but this is the first time we have seen that the world's opinion is with us '“ which is because of social media.

'Communication has been direct, bypassing the media filters of the West, which has been an important step.

'This movement along with the boycott, if continued at the same pace, could make a powerful impact.'‌
